ESTIMATED PUBLICATION DATE: AUTUMN-WINTER 2008

This book, originally conceived as a part of the Endgrain Editions series, has taken on characteristics which make it significantly different from the other books. We have therefore decided to publish it separately, as an adjunct or companion volume, rather than as a part of the series.

Gaylord Schanilec has moved the creation of multi-coloured wood engravings forward exponentially in the last twenty years. The books he has produced from his own Midnight Paper Sales Press - books like A House in the Country and High Bridge - and those he has published with other presses, like Gwasg Gregynog’s Drum Taps, have all been greeted with admiration and delight by lovers of book illustration in general, and wood engraving in particular. We invited Gaylord to be part of the series some time ago, and we are inspired at the thought of showing a cross-section of his colour work in one volume.

Gaylord is also a story-teller who enjoys the narrative of work and the processes which lead to his books and his images. The recent Ink on the Elbow, co-published and co-written by Gaylord with David Esslemont, looks into the work of making and publishing itself. In Gaylord Schanilec, Pictures and Stories, the images will be printed with an interlinear commentary and discussion of their making and their characters as parts of the artist’s life and growth.

The arrangement will be chronological, and Gaylord will be visiting the press during the printing of the book so that he and Jan can discuss the methods of printing these pictures, which often have as many as five registered blocks in as many colours. The printing will continue through the fall and winter while Gaylord and Crispin work on the text and fit the two streams of the book together.

This promises to be a fascinating and fresh look at the work of one of America’s most distinctive and accomplished artists and printers.
