HORSE WHISPER PRESS

2004

Our daughter Polly has been exposed to books and to poetry all her life, and it is not surprising that she should have chosen a selection of Emily Dickinson’s poems as the material for her second book. She has chosen twenty-two poems - some well-known, others rarely read - ranging throughout Dickinson’s writing life, and arranged them into four sections, separately titled ‘Light’, ‘Dark’, ‘Life’, and ‘Death’.

Having determined on the text, Polly then approached five wood engravers about illustrations for each of the four sections, and for a frontispiece. The idea seemed to intrigue all of them, and as a result the book boasts a frontispiece by Barry Moser, with section engravings by Simon Brett, Andy English, Peter Lazarov, and Richard Wagener. The styles range from portraiture to abstraction. All are full-page engravings, tipped in facing the opening of the section to which they refer.

The binding features a hand-marbled paper specially commissioned from Ann Muir for the book.
